Starting An Accountancy Practice
With Marketing Power

What a fantastic time we had recently when we were one of the guest speakers at a webinar organised by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW)

Focusing on people who are eager to start a practice the event was designed to give all the information you need to know including regulatory and compliance matters, insurance, software and marketing.

Excellent Support Offered By The ICAEW

Roz Harrington Senior Practice Manager at the ICAEW welcomed the many delegates to the event and introduced the plan for the days schedule. The sessions then kicked off with an excellent session delivered by David Stevens from the ICAEW all around the documentation and processes needed from a regulatory perspective. What really stood out was the level of details given and the extent of support offered to new firms from the ICAEW. We then heard from Sage and Chris Downing, their director of operations talked about making the right choice of accounting software to support your firm and ensure remaining up to date on legislative changes as well as making best use of time.

Marketing Planning For A Firm Foundation

Then it was over to us! Our director, Margaret, gave a 45-minute presentation focusing on the 4 main areas (button-holes) that need to be considered to begin structuring a process to support with a marketing plan. Margaret previously worked as the Marketing Manager in a regional accountancy practice so has seen first hand how to create a marketing department and ensure its sustainability. We talked through our button-holes and what needs to be considered in each as a firm begins its journey.

With time management a real focus for accountants, its super important to start out with a solid plan. Being able to drill down into the service offering for the firm, the type of clients they want to reach out to and the ways in which that can be done. Once we covered those points, we moved onto the connecting relationships (threads) of how that needs to look, and the kinds of tasks involved.

Setting Up For Growth

It was an energetic morning and we absolutely loved it. The afternoon session went on to feature Marsh Insurance and a case study of a firm that had set up and seen incredible growth.

Overall, the event was a resounding success and with over 120 delegates involved on the day with even more requesting the recording, the future is certainly looking exciting for new firms setting up.

Already we have been talking to a large number of those involved on the day about embedding a marketing culture in their firm from the outset and just how long-term growth can be achieved by starting out with marketing power!
